"Where to?" The Captain asked.
"Wherever the ship's headed." The Newbie replied.
"The ship's headed to the horizon and beyond. You have to choose a destination. And a role for your time on the ship." The Captain insisted in a soft but firm voice.
"Oh Okay. I am not sure. Where's the majority headed?" The Newbie asked.
"To some island."
"I will go with them." The Newbie replied.
"Of course. What else is there to do? There's strength in numbers & it will be a party, I am sure."
"Okay. Your will, your energy, your choice. And, what role would you play on the ship?"
"What's the majority up to?"
"Oh Swell. I will go join them."
"Of course. Which way?"
"That way." The Captain pointed the way ahead.
The ship carried on, passing through storms & fog, bright days & starry nights, leading its inhabitants to their destinations.
The Newbie got out with the majority & the ship chugged along its endless trajectory.
Few weathers had elapsed & the Newbie was back. Only no longer a Newbie, this reincarnation made the Newbie, an Oldie: Haggard, slumped shoulders, tired eyes.
"Where to, this time around?" The Captain asked.
The Oldie gulped & looked up at the Sky & then at the Captain.
"I don't know. Can I choose later? What are the rules?"
"This ship has no rules except that you must choose your destination & your role."
"I am going to be an observer & a voyager. I don't know if there are others of my kind out here but I am fine being a lone wolf until then. I don't have a destination as of now but I will let my soul come up with one when one feels right. Until then I want to be out on the deck, under the stars & the sun, in a fog and a storm and take in everything in its purest form. Watch the sun come up & the sunset & the rocks & the birds."
"Okay. Your choice, your will, your energy."
The Oldie spent all the time on the infinitely long deck & took to poetry, art, meditation & math. The Oldie was puzzled by something: the Oldie could not be around Newbies; they made the Oldie nervous & literally run the other way.
Sometime soon, the Oldie came upon others that practiced meditation, poetry, art, math & as they got together, they almost spent an eternity on the deck with no thought of the destination. Their journey had taken them past many islands and they had seen many get in & get out.
"I saw that. And I know what's going on. But you need to go inward & find the answer." The Oldie's friend smiled as the friend had seen the Oldie scramble for life as a Newbie tried to become pals with the Oldie.
Days & nights passed & as the Oldie intensified meditation & contemplation, one evening, the Oldie entered a trance like state where the Oldie, now a Newbie, was being murdered by a group of Newbies; first the soul & then the body.
The Oldie let the vision play out its course & came out with an awareness that explained Oldie's mistrust of the Newbies. Enlightened & feeling free, the Oldie joined friends & they finally chose an island to call home.
